| Spinnaker Leg
by Robert Bethune
Every spring the National Offshore One-Design races come to Lake St. Clair, where the open water contrasts with the urban landscape of the norhern suburbs of Detroit. Many sizes, classes and kinds of boat compete in simultaneous races. Here, several boats are startingt the downwind leg, spinnakers catching the light air, as the soft spring weather on the lake makes for a fine day of sailing.
As this detail of the two boats at center shows, the image is essentially pointillist. If Seurat knew how quickly a digital process can do on a computer what he spent so many hours and days doing with the tip of his brush, he would be both jealous and eager to try it, I think. Of course, in a sense, all digital imagery is pointillist; we just don't usually see it this way.
