Skeeters are the biggest class of iceboat commonly raced in the Great
Lakes area. They are fast - well over 100 miles per hour - and they are not
easy to control, even more so than the Renegades. They sound like
locomotives as the round the mark, the ice flies from the runners the way
metal flies from a cutting machine.
This race was late in the day, and the grays of winter were starting to
make the whole lake look even colder than it really was, which was cold
enough! For me, visually, everything started to soften and blend, and the
power of the big boats seemed to soften along with it.
This detail shows how the image is composed of softened, rounded,
abstracted forms based on the original shapes in the photograph, but
smoothed and blended into areas of muted shape and color.
