Through digital photography I find myself with an entirely new way to create images. I can play with images on the computer in ways no darkroom technique could possibly match, and I can build new layers of evocative meaning into an image far beyond the original photograph, no matter how rich it was. So now here I am, a shameless devotee of the digitally manipulated photographic print. I play and play and play with all sorts of tools and techniques, always looking for that wonderful moment when the image suddenly says, "Yes. You have found my secret." Those are the secrets that I call Katagrafika--the special heart of the image that will reveal itself suddenly after patient endeavor. That is what I want to share with you. These images begin as photographs, and then undergo a wide variety of transformations to become a special way of seeing--sometimes like a traditional medium such as oils, pastels or watercolors, sometimes like some medium yet to be invented. Prints purchased from the Freshwater Seas studio are personally printed by the artist on proven equipment using archival inks and papers.
