Sunset in the Hawaiian Islands moves fast. You can really feel the world turning as you watch the sun taking a swan-dive into the ocean. From some of the islands, you get a short glimpse of the next island to the west, as you do here, looking at the silhouette of Oahu from a beach on Molokai.

For me, the visual challenge of this image was to pull it away from the reality of just another Hawaiian sunset. You can't help it; you take so many of these pictures that after a while they all blend into one another. So, how to make this image convey the underlying reality, to make it more the essence of a Hawaiian sunset? It seems to me that what this image wants is to be turned into textures, as if the sunset had imprinted itself on a piece of the handmade rough tapa cloth you find here and there in the islands.

This detail show how I worked the slick reality of the original image into a texture drawn from the rolling, irregular shapes of the waves and the sense of the earth on the distant land masses. That same feel is carried up into the sky, turning the ethereal clouds into something more like the solid earth.
