The largest traditional yachts in the Chicago to Mackinac and Port Huron to Mackinac races are the boats in the Great Lakes 70 class. This image is made from a picture of one of those boats, Holua. Here she found herself at the gentle extreme of Great Lakes weather, ghosting along in a breeze just strong enough to fill her sails. The crew is almost as quiet as the wind; no one wants to move for fear some slight shift of weight or balance might slow the boat down!

The inspiration for the transformations applied to this image is actully the feel of the air and the light in such weather-soft, without edges, hazy, though not foggy, without a clear horizon, water and air merging in the distance as the yacht moves almost without a sound.

This detail shows how the softness of the overall texture is actually made from a screen like lines found in a woodcut, but with the edges softened and blended. The crew and the details of the yacht's fittings almost dissolve, but not quite; the edge of human purpose holds even while the air and water blend.
