| DN At The Finish
by Robert Bethune
DN At The Finish celebrates both the famous DN class of racing iceboats and the thrills and speed at the finish line. These little boats--hardly more than a platform for the skipper, a mast and a sail that almost dwarfs the boat--can hit speeds on the ice as high as 70 miles per hour or better. The skipper lies on his back, controlling the boat by turning the front runner and managing the sail--if indeed the boat can be said to be controlled! It's a wild and exciting kind of racing, and I've tried to capture the feel of that here. This image is is produced on a 24 by 18 inch sheet; the giclee image itself on the print is 18 by 12 inches at 166 dots per inch, leaving a 4-inch border for easy framing and matting. It is printed from a 3000 by 2000 pixel, 12.8 megabyte master file.
This detail shows you how the image has been transformed and textured into a pattern of brushed and wind-swept forms with intense colors on the pilot contrasting with the broad expanses of white in the sail. It comes from a small section of the image around the pilot's body.
