8-Meter Sunset is a highly stylized image of one of the beautiful 8-Meter yachts that race on Lake Erie. I use the darkness that rises from the west late in a Great Lakes sunset, after the sun is well below the horizon and night is starting to fall, and trace the texture of the water and the lines of the yacht in gold against that rising warm night.

This detail shows how the tracery of the sails, lines and water texture is realized against the smooth gradient background. The gold tracery, seen at this level, forms abstract patterns that echo the flowing swirls of the wind and water that send the boat across the lake.
